Hi.

Welcome to the voyages of the Sailing Vessel Itajime

This Season on Itajime

This Season on Itajime

Kate and I spent much of this season in the remote Tuamotu atolls. In the atolls there is little access to the internet. If there is access it is too slow to upload images. So, now that we are back in SF for a while, I will be posting this season’s images with some story line.

A typical morning on Itajime. Wind in our hair and coffee in Kate’s hand.

In late August, a Maramuu was predicted for the Tuamotus. A Maramuu is a high pressure wind storm with 20-40 knot colder winds from the SouthEast. As land in the atolls is flat with no hills or mountains to shelter you from the wind, sailors need to be very careful where they anchor for these storms. Kate and I, along with our boat buddies, Mike and Katie decided to go to the SouthEast corner of Toau.

Here are our boats viewed from shore in Toau. Note the whitecaps behind us and the fully extended anchor chains indicating windy conditions. That is Mike and Katie’s Pangea on the left and our Itajime on the right.

We chose our anchorage well because we were able to get to shore and play with the pigs and swim, kayak and paddleboard in the lagoon.
